In 2010, when 21 Drops was first concieved, aromatherapy was not the familiar healing modality it has now become in the past decade and a half.
When 21 Drops launched to the public in 2011, it pioneered a thoroughly modern approach to aromatherapy—combining ancient plant wisdom with state-of-the-art science and contemporary design to address common wellness concerns. The numbered, color-coded essential oil blends delivered targeted therapeutic benefits in sleek, portable packaging with thoughtful accompanying narratives that captured attention and helped set intentions.
Each of the 21 custom formulations addressed a specific need—from Sleep and Focus to Immunity and De-Stress—creating a comprehensive system of aromatherapy solutions for everyday life. These therapeutic-grade essential oils were exotic in origin, ancient in derivation, and proven in application.

Cary Caster, a clinical aromatherapist with extensive botanical training, was the visionary behind 21 Drops. Her deep knowledge of plant therapeutics and passion for holistic wellness inspired the creation of the product line, while her expertise guided the development of each precisely crafted formula to ensure both efficacy and safety.
As Creative Director, I led the development of the brand identity, packaging system, and visual storytelling that communicated our modern approach to this ancient practice. My design work aimed to make these exquisite blends and the concept of aromatherapy more accessible and desirable to contemporary consumers.
The design system featured a different typeface and color for each numbered blend, enhancing recognition while communicating blend-specific attributes. Each of the 21 blends had its own embossed pattern on its kraft box, reinforcing individual identity while maintaining brand consistency.
The most innovative aspect of our packaging was the silicon sleeve on each blend. Little glass vials (the best way to store the oils) typically feel too fragile for on-the-go use. By protecting each formulation with a colored silicon sleeve matching its respective blend, we transformed them from something precious in the medicine cabinet to something easily and safely tossed into a purse or briefcase—ready whenever needed. This innovative approach earned industry-wide recognition, culminating in the 2011 Gold Pentaward in the Body category (Pentawards being the first and only worldwide competition exclusively devoted to packaging design).
